Advocacy at a Glance

May 16, 2014

Advocacy at a Glance offers you the bullet point summary of current advocacy issues associated with the goals of the Alliance for a Stronger FDA.

  • Appropriations Subcommittee Mark-ups Scheduled for May 20. Next Tuesday will be a busy day:
    • The House Agriculture/FDA appropriations subcommittee will mark up its FY 15 bill at 10 a.m. in Room 2362-A in the Rayburn House Office Building.
    • The Senate Agriculture/FDA appropriations subcommittee will mark up its FY 15 bill at 3 p.m. in Room SD-192 (Dirksen).
    • Both subcommittees plan to webcast their mark-ups.
  • When Will Full Committees Mark-up? Although it has not been announced, we anticipate the Senate Appropriations Committee will conduct a mark-up on May 22, including the bill passed by the Ag/FDA subcommittee on May 20. This follows a common pattern in the Senate for the appropriations committee to do full committee mark-ups almost immediately after subcommittee. In contrast, we are not sure when the House will mark-up at the full committee, but we think it will be the last week of May.
  • When Will We See the House and Senate Levels for FDA? Traditionally, the subcommittee mark is not released. We usually see numbers at the time of the full committee mark-up. We will provide Alliance members with analysis as soon as we have the committee’s proposal. Meantime, this week’s Analysis and Commentary provides context on FY 15 and how it compares to prior years.
  • Research-by-Consortia: Passing Fad or Industry Standard – Webinar, May 28, 2014; 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. Eastern. Alliance member FasterCures is holding a free webinar about the emerging model of collaboration-by-consortium and its value to the biomedical research ecosystem.
