Media Release: June 11, 2008

WASHINGTON, DC, June 11, 2008 — The Alliance for a Stronger FDA today urged Congressional leaders to include $275 million in additional funding for FDA in the FY 2008 emergency supplemental bill. The text of the letter follows:

June 11, 2008

The Honorable Nancy Pelosi
Speaker of the House
U.S. House of Representatives
235 Cannon HOB
Washington, DC 20515

Dear Madam Speaker:

On behalf of more than 180 consumer, patient and industry groups who are members of the Alliance for a Stronger FDA, I write to ask your support to encourage Congress to include $275 million for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the Supplemental appropriations bill being considered in the House and Senate.

The Administration’s FY 2009 budget amendment submission acknowledges the immediate need for $275 million for FDA to address serious health and safety issues throughout the United States. The FDA Commissioner has carefully outlined what the funding would be used for and has stated the urgent need for this funding.

The FDA’s urgent situation is further demonstrated by the current salmonella crisis spreading across the U.S. from tomatoes. This is an unfortunate, but real, demonstration of the public health and economic implications of underfunding FDA. The foodborne illness outbreak related to tomatoes has caused suffering by consumers who have been sickened, and already has cost producers an estimated $50 million.

We need to strengthen the FDA with the funding it needs to protect us. Additional resources would allow the FDA to develop better standards and implement educational programs on salmonella control. Furthermore, more resources could enable to FDA to rapidly trace and respond more rapidly to food-borne illness outbreaks.

The Senate has recognized the FDA’s urgent needs, not only in this but other areas, by adding $275 million into its version of the supplemental, and on behalf of our Alliance I respectfully request that the House do the same or recede to the Senate in conference.

/s/ Wayne L. Pines
President, Alliance for a Stronger FDA

The Honorable Harry Reid
The Honorable Mitch McConnell
The Honorable Robert Byrd
The Honorable Thad Cochran
The Honorable Herb Kohl
The Honorable Bob Bennett
