Tom Harkin on Food Safety and the Economy

In another opinion piece in Roll Call today, under the title "Harkin: Slashing food safety not a viable solution," Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), a member of the Senate's Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development and Food and Drug Administration, writes:

Yes, it will cost money to implement the Food Safety Modernization Act. But the alternative — resigning ourselves to an endless cycle of toxic outbreaks, illness, death and damage to our economy — is the ultimate false economy.
