Alliance Comments on Suggested House Appropriation for FDA for FY 17
The House Appropriations Sub-Committee on Agriculture/FDA marked-up their FY17 spending bill late yesterday afternoon (Wednesday, April 13). The next step for the bill will be to go to the full Appropriations Committee for mark-up.The House Appropriations Subcommittee bill would provide the FDA with $2.754 billion in budget authority appropriations for fiscal year 2017. The amount is $33 million above the FY 16 appropriation for FDA and $18 million above the President’s request for FDA funding for FY 17.The Alliance’s has issued a public statement on the mark-up, as well as our "center-by-center" breakdown of the funding. Our perspective is best summed up by the following statement from Alliance President Cynthia Bens:
The Alliance for a Stronger FDA is encouraged that the House proposal for FDA funding exceeds the Administration’s meager request. Nonetheless, the House mark fails to acknowledge FDA’s rapidly expanding role in food and drug safety and innovative medical product development.
